The Ford Explorer traces its roots back to 1990, when the first generation arrived for the 1991 model year and set the SUV market on fire. The current Explorer is now in its fourth model year and offers buyers a spacious interior with a third row, athletic exterior styling, and three powertrain options.
It’s a capable vehicle that’s more than capable of getting the job done, especially when the job is hauling a family and their belongings, and there’s even a high-performance version, but it’s never modest. . Mid-size SUVs are currently in the market.
There are more premium and more refined offerings, including the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, and Jeep Grand Cherokee L. Ford has tried to improve the Explorer’s competitiveness by rolling out upgraded variants like the off-road-oriented Explorer Timberline. . Still, we still think buyers in this segment should at least investigate other options, of which there are many.
Pricing & Which One to Buy
King Ranch $56,865
We think the limited mid-range model is the best explorer for the money. The smaller single-turbo four-cylinder engine doesn’t pack as much punch as the twin-turbo Bralier V-6, but it gets the job done and does it more efficiently than the larger engine. You can tow up to 5,300 pounds when equipped with the Towing Package. We’re also adding all-wheel drive for $2,000.
Furthermore, we believe that the required standard features should be sufficient for the limited time frame. These include a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, 20-inch wheels, a heated and power-adjustable steering wheel, leather upholstery, a power-folding third row, and upgraded driver assists such as adaptive cruise control. If you want more off-road capability, the slightly more expensive Timberline is a good choice. It is powered by the same turbo four.
What’s New In 2023 Model?
The Ford Explorer hasn’t seen any performance, capability or technology changes for the 2023 model year, though a new Red Jewel Metallic paint color option has been added to the mix.
Engine, Transmission And Performance
Base, XLT, and Limited trims come with a 300-hp turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine, and it impresses the Explorer with a decent amount of torque. A Timberline we tested with this engine hit 60 mph in 6.0 seconds. The most dynamic drivers among us will prefer the King Ranch, Platinum or ST models, equipped with a 400-horsepower 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine.
An Explorer Hybrid joins the lineup for 2020. It combines a 3.3-liter V-6 engine with an electric motor that produces a combined 318 horsepower. A hybrid powertrain configuration is also available for the Limited and Platinum models, and while it makes sense for those looking to take advantage of its high EPA-rated city mpg, we’d prefer the standard turbocharged four-cylinder. The Explorer rides on a rear-wheel drive platform, but all-wheel drive remains optional. A 10-speed automatic transmission is standard across the board. Ride and handling are acceptable and present, but far from fun. The Explorer ST is very athletic, and its extra power and stiffer suspension make it a true performance SUV. When properly equipped, the Explorer can tow up to 5,600 pounds.
Interior, Comfort And Cargo
While the interior design may seem boring, the Explorer’s cabin is functional and comfortable – at least for those in the first two rows. Getting into the standard third row is easy enough thanks to a mechanism that shifts the second row seats to the side at the touch of a button.
However, once back there, older kids and adults will find that the seat is close enough to the floor to be comfortable. Competitors like the Chevrolet Traverse and Volkswagen Atlas offer more comfort in the third row. We managed to fit four carry-on suitcases behind the Ford’s third row, and we fit a total of 31 bags on both rear rows.
Fuel Economy & Real-World MPG
The EPA has yet to release fuel economy ratings for the 2023 Explorer, but we expect those numbers to remain the same as for the 2022 model as the SUV’s performance hasn’t changed. It’s no surprise that the Explorer has different EPA fuel economy ratings due to different powertrain and transmission combinations.
The rear-wheel-drive hybrid model is rated as the most economical, with estimates up to 27 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. The addition of all-wheel drive lowers the hybrid’s rating by three and four mpg, respectively. We tested one on our highway at 75 mph where it only got 24 mpg.
Explorer ST 400 hp We also put the all-wheel-drive four-cylinder Explorer to our highway fuel economy test. The government estimates that this version will earn 20 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. We saw 28 mpg.
Infotainment & Connectivity
An 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system comes standard and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities, as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot. The system is attractive and responsive, but not as intuitive as we would like. The rotary control will help in this regard. To get the extra 10.1-inch vertical screen, you’ll need to upgrade to one of the more expensive Explorer trims. However, every model is available with voice navigation as well as a rear seat entertainment system. In addition to the base Explorer, a 12-speaker B&O stereo comes standard.
Safety & Driver-Assistance Features
Ford equips every Explorer with standard driver-assistance technology and offers improvements such as self-parking assistance. Ford offers a fully average limited warranty and a powertrain warranty that is compatible with most competitors’ plans. However, the company does not provide the free maintenance that Toyota and Chevy do.
